Hands DONATE Hands

Berit Larson

Hi, I am Berit Larson.  This February I will be joining 17 others on a Mission Trip to Kenya including our own Mary Van Wesep.  This will be my fourth trip.  Each time I have gone, I have felt the Lord calling me to go. Each time I have returned home immensely blessed, hoping that I was able to bless other as well.

I so appreciate the respect this team shows for the Kenyans.  We don’t pretend to know the needs of the people we will serve.  We take our lead from them.  We offer hearts that care, bodies to work, our willingness to create relationships, and donations to pay for the work that is done.  I ask that you join this Kenya Mission team with your prayers and your financial support.  Together we can make a positive difference in the lives of many.

Mary Van Wesep

My name is Mary Van Wesep and this will be my second mission trip to Kenya. I last went in 2014 and the experience changed my live. I realized I had a heart for mission. Since that trip I went on two mission trips here in the United States. In 2018 I joined a small group from the Ashland First United Methodist Church (FUMC) and headed to Washington state to help build a house for a person whose home had been destroyed by fire. One year later that small group of six grew to thirteen and we went to California to help with restoration after a devastating fire there. Now, with your support, I am returning to Kenya to be of help to those in need.

Projects on the Mission

The projects we will be involved in but not limited to are as follows:

  • Support for the Maua Methodist Hospital
  • Deworm hundreds of school children
  • Provide a one-day Bush Medical Clinic
  • Build an AIDS orphan's home
  • Work at the Bio-Intensive Training Center
  • Provide support for a local orphanage
  • Local church/school projects, as needed

School Supplies for Kenya

We invited you to come with us through your support. That support started with prayer, prayer that is unceasing.

Last year, during the months of November and December and through the 2022 Alternative Gift Giving program, you were given the opportunity to support this mission financially. And many of you did…Generously! Thank you.

We leave in one month for our mission to Kenya and we have another support opportunity for you to consider. This might be just the one you have been waiting for. Most of our projects involve children, such as: building homes, school construction and improvements, school deworming programs, and providing school supplies. Here is how you can help:

Purchase any of the following items listed below, bring them to church and deposit them in the box located in the narthex. Or make a monetary donation and we will purchase the supplies for you.

Thanks to all for your generous love and support,

Mary Van Wesep and Berit Larson

Mission Story...Impacting a Life

Imagine that a half inch growth protrudes from the side of your child’s eye.  The hospital is over an hour’s drive away and you can’t walk that far.  You have no money to pay for transportation or for the cost of the hospital.  You can do nothing to help your child.

That was the reality facing the parents of a ten-year-old boy at a Kenya bush school in 2014.

But the story does not end there. Because of the sharp eyes of a member of the Kenya Volunteers in Mission Team the boy’s tumor was spotted.  A Maua Methodist Hospital staff member was alerted.  He took a picture of the tumor and sent it to the hospital for a diagnosis. Within a few minutes the results were received- the tumor needed to be removed as soon as possible.

The total cost of transportation for the boy and his mother to the hospital, the surgery, hospital stay, and food for four weeks to ensure that the child had the strength to heal properly was about $100. It took our team all of two seconds to vote to support this child. That support was made possible through generous giving from friends and family. That support enabled us to make a decision that changed the lives of this family.

That day the boy and his mother went to the hospital.

We continue to be so grateful to the many friends and family members who supported that 2014 trip so generously allowing us to make a decision that changed the lives of this family.

You too can be a part of changing lives. Please consider a donation to the Kenya Volunteers in Mission Team 2023 so that we can continue to make a positive difference in the lives of the Kenyan people.
